Enhancing Safety and Precision in Oncological Treatments: AIRSKIN's Role at CNAO, Pavia

In the pursuit of safety and precision in oncological treatments, Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO) prioritizes patient well-being during delicate procedures like proton or carbon ion therapy. With it's innovative approach, AIRSKIN ensures an extra layer of safety for patient and operator without overshadowing the core mission of precision treatment.

The C-arm, a pivotal apparatus housing the flat panel detector and X-ray tube, is the nexus of activity during treatments. Here, the integration of AIRSKIN modules brings an additional layer of safety. Comprising soft pads continuously monitoring pressure, these modules are the first line of defense against any undue physical contact. This becomes particularly crucial given the proximity of the C-arm to the patient under treatment.

Interview with Pietro Cerveri - Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano.

AIRSKIN:

Why have you decided to integrate the AIRSKIN Modules into the C-arm?

Pietro Cerveri:

It was especially for simplicity, efficient and basic electric control, adaptation to the specific shape of the arm, and easy integration with standard modules for the C arm. The straightforward integration with the Safety PLC was seamless - it took just 1 hour, and everything was up and running.

AIRSKIN:

How important was safety for your decision of a safety technology covering the C-arm tool?

Pietro Cerveri:

Very important and was one of the main issues that we faced in the beginning, when we presented the project to CNAO. We were looking for solutions all over Europe and ended up deciding for AIRSKIN technology. Safety was one of the topics with the biggest importance for us. Performance Level e / Cat. 3 acc. ISO 13849 was very important to us too.

AIRSKIN:

In what ways does AIRSKIN enhance collaboration/cooperation/coexistence between the C-arm tool, medical professionals and the patient?

Pietro Cerveri:

With the help of AIRSKIN and our Software, we immediately recognize any issues or colissions and can immediately inform the operator and patients. With the pads we can make sure that the robot stops immediately in a collision and also make sure that the patient will not get hurt.

AIRSKIN:

Based on your experience, how can the integration of AIRSKIN influence the overall safety of medical procedures involving the C-arm tool?

Pietro Cerveri:

It helps us a lot, because with the use of AIRSKIN, we are able to make medical applications safe both for the patient as well as for the operator.

AIRSKIN:

How do you envision the role of technologies like AIRSKIN evolving in the medical field in the coming years?

Pietro Cerveri:

I think, that especially with the evolvement of artificial intelligence and technologies like AIRSKIN, the medical field will have a lot of potential for improvement of efficience and collaboration of different technologies in applications, to track issues, to have applications safe, to have technologies working together.
